“People ask, how can a person abuse a child? I ask, how can so many ‘good’ people not do anything about it?”
― Adrianne Simeone
Adrianne Simeone, is the Founder and President of the Mama Bear Effect Inc. The Mama Bear Effect is an Organization which ” seeks to empower adults to actively protect children from sexual abuse by raising awareness, and promoting conversations and behaviors that can prevent abuse.” Adrianne is a resident of Massachusetts, with her husband, John, and their four children: Angela, Cameron, Laila and Giuliana.
“A graduate of Babson College, Adrianne spent most of her professional career working for her father’s business, Boston Salads and Prepared Foods. After the birth of their daughter, she decided to take a break from being in the workforce. It was after reading one too many stories about a child being sexually abused, that Adrianne realized it wasn’t enough to feel anguish for these children – she felt a calling to utilize her professional skills and make a positive contribution.”
Adrianne believes that with the power of social media, The Mama Bear Effect can create change and encourage people to protect children from being sexually abused. Though the information is out there, Adrianne believes that “people just need to hear it and make an active choice to be responsible and proactive.” Adrianne helps spread that information through the use of social media to bring more awareness to this very important subject to help with prevention.
Her social media efforts are working, in fact, the first time I had heard of The Mama Bear Effect it was through a meme on Facebook. I’m not sure who had posted it, but I was immediately drawn in. I wanted to know more about this organization, “The Mama Bear Effect,” that was addressing a very taboo subject, that was near and dear to my heart- Sexual Abuse.
The fact that someone had created an Organization to support and discuss Childhood sexual abuse awareness and prevention was inspiring to me. It certainly was a subject that was not openly discussed when I was growing up, and it was a subject that for me personally carried large amounts of shame with it, that I spent years grappling with and working to overcome and recover from.
I felt a kinship to the Founder Adrianne Simeone, I felt like she personally cared about and spoke for my younger self who had been sexually violated and abused. It felt like she was the voice that I didn’t have for myself back then. Adrianne gave me a gift by validating and empathizing with the pain and shame I had experienced. She helped remind me that the abuse was not my fault and that I wasn’t alone.
I immediately contacted Adrianne after learning about The Mama Bear Effect to see if I could help in any way. Adrianne said there was a Boston parade coming up where they would be marching and passing out pamphlets to the public. I was all in, and couldn’t wait to participate. Meeting Adrianne that day and seeing all the hard work she put into the event including making an entire float with a cat and the hat theme, which was a big hit with the kids. I felt a pride that day as I marched alongside Adrianne in Boston and with each person that I handed a pamphlet to or spoke to, I felt that if it helped prevent one child from enduring what I did as a child, then it was not all in vain.
Adrianne and her work with The Mama Bear Effect were the inspiration for my own website and Blog Follow Your Song, which was created to bring Inspiration, Encouragement, and Hope to survivors of all forms of Abuse. Adrianne has not only personally inspired me but has helped and inspired thousands of others with her work through The Mama Bear Effect.
